I visited Casanare in 2008. It has few roads and no tourist infrastructure, due to the fact that the paramilitary groups controlled the area until recently. It is a great area, with endless grasslands and large ranches. We didn’t see any cats, but the previous group of conservationists had seen a mountain lion. There is an endemic armadillo that is fairly easy to find, and we also saw southern tamandua, capybaras, white-tailed deer, common possum and huge numbers and variety of birds. A fantastic place–I just hope the oil and gas boom doesn’t destroy it.
