Good new for Mountain Gorillas. Bad news for Red Squirrels

A couple of stories…

Mountain Gorilla population in Rwanda increasing

but Grey Squirrels are spreading in Italy and displacing the native Reds (thanks to John Wright who sent me this from BBC wildlife)

Italian scientists say that grey squirrels have caused the almost complete disappearance of native reds over an area of 1,150 sq km in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Grey squirrels were released into the wild near Turin in 1948; by 1990 they covered an area of 200 sq km and by 2012 this figure had increased to 2,000 sq km.
