Texas has some rugged country and visiting Big Bend National Park was a long cherished ambition. I saw plenty of roadkill Armadillos - several clutching empty bottles of Lone Star beer - but couldn't find a live one. Big Bend National Park, September 1998 – Collared Peccary, White-tailed Deer (race Carminis), probable Merriam’s Kangaroo Rat, Grey Fox. Mountain Lions are seen fairly regularly (but not by me). Guadalupe Mountains, September 1998 – Texas Antelope Squirrel, Western Pipistrelle (roosting inside Hunter’s Cabin on the McCittrick Canyon Trail). Lyndon Johnson State Park, September 1998 – Virginia Oppossum, Eastern Fox Squirrel, dipped on the reputedly common Armadillos (yet again). See Also ID help for south Texas rodent (Laguna Atascosa NWR, Jan 2011). Other People's Trip Reports South-western USA, 2004: Steve-Anyon Smith, one month in Arizona, California and Texas & 46 mammals... including an Armadillo. Texas, 2001: Richard Webb, one week & 14+ mammals. |
