East Africa Field Guide Recommendations?

I’ll be traveling to Kenya this winter (and maybe also Tanzania) and am looking for some good field guides to bring with me. A good mammal section is a must of course but information on reptiles, birds, etc is also appreciated. If anybody has some suggestions on the matter I’d love to hear them.

Also, I’ll be focusing on the Southeast portion of Kenya and maybe Northern Tanzania. If any one has been to Mt. Kilimanjaro NP, Tzavo NP, Arabuko Sokoke Forest NP, or any other parks in that area I’d love to hear about that too.

Thanks,

Zach

Hi Zach. Nearly everything useful I could tell you on Kenya and Tanzania is on the site’s Kenya https://www.mammalwatching.com/places/kenya/ and Tanzania pages. https://www.mammalwatching.com/places/tanzania-zanzibar/ obviously it’s a great region

For field guides then Charles Foley’s guide to the mammals of Tanzania is fabulous if you do get to TZ. There’s a link to it on the TZ page — Jon

And – any recommendations for a field guide to African mammals continent-wide ? I’ve tried Kingdon, which is good, but I am wondering whether a better option exists. Coverage should be thorough, subspecies and small species included. Differentiation of similar species should be detailed. Same for illustrations – should show males and females for each sexually-dimorphic species, as well as immatures if their appearance is known. And good range maps, preferrably showing international boundaries, are a must. Deepest thanks for any advice.
