South Tanzania trip organization

Hi everyone

I’m planning to visit South Tanzania at the end of year 2017 (typically around Selous – Mikumi – Ruaha) and I’m looking for advice and recommendation on which parks / areas I should not miss, those I could skip and which accomodations that are not too crazy expensive I should consider.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and help on this

Samuel

    Hi Samuel,

This depends a lot on what species you’re trying to see. The three reserves you mention are all savanna ecosystem (although the Selous does have a lot big rivers in some areas), and most of the species you will see there are going to be similar. If you’re looking for diversity then I would add in a trip to the Udzungwa Mountains, where there are a number of endemic primates. Personally I would concentrate on Ruaha (which is the largest Park and has the biggest mammal list), and the Udzungwa mountains. There is a lodge in Mikumi which gets Honey badgers coming at night (or used to – they feed them there), but unless this is a key species for you I’d probably skip that Park. You may want to look at some of the trip reports on Safaritalk, which is a travel website focusing on Africa, to get an idea of where to stay. Just to warn you that there are fewer lodges in the southern Parks in Tanzania, and prices are correspondingly higher. If you have any other questions about the wildlife and what you might see in the different Parks let me know.

Thanks a lot for your feedback Charles. Very helpful
Yes I forgot to mention but we also had Udzungwa NP in our list so as to see the monkeys there.
Actually, I would like to see Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and wild dogs during this trip and I thought Selous would be good for that.
“If you have any other questions about what you might see in the different Parks let me know”. –> yes please, that would great
Looking forward to hearing from you
      regards
