PLEASE VOTE: 2018 Mammalwatching Awards (the N.U.T.T.E.R. awards)

Macaca cropped 2

Thank you to all who sent me nominations for Mammalwatching’s most Notable, Unique, Tantalizing, Tenacious and Enlightening Reports: The N.U.T.T.E.R Awards for 2018.

I have set up a Google poll to collect the votes. I hope it works. So far as I can see anyone – should they really want to – can vote multiple times. Yes there is a danger that mammalwatching democracy will be hijacked by Russian bots.

Only reports that cover trips taken during 2018 are eligible. I had a few nominations for much older reports. I know – time flies!

I have nominated a selection of popular reports for 2018, but if your favourite report (or reporter) is missing then feel free to add them using the “other” button in each question.

Polls close on Monday 24 March. Please vote here

N.U.T.T.E.R. Awards: Please vote for my Dwarf Bharal!

First of all: Thank you Jon for nominating my trip report on Dwarf Bharal in the category “Best Obscure Mammal” – http://www.wilddocu.de/dwarf-bharal-tour-china-yunnan-rini-mountain-2018/ – I feel very honoured. Thank you altogether for setting up the N.U.T.T.E.R. Awards. I believe it is a great idea and I am sure we will all get additional good information through it and will be well entertained.

Now, why do I do this? Why do I advertise my own report and do not feel silly at all? Let me explain: I told my wife about the awards and naturally I caught her interest: Really, you are nominated for an Oscar?! Her second question took a little bit the wind out of my sails: What?!! You might win an Oscar, but its not worth a cent?! Then she took me by surprise (and I am still wondering if there could be a snag to the story) by announcing: “If you win that Oscar, I buy you this new lens.”

THE LENS: Photography is my passion. And for me photos are a very important ingredient in mammal watching trip reports. Over many years I have collected a nice array of different lenses – but there is always one that could be just a little bit advantageous under certain circumstances. The one I am dreaming of for quite a while is especially suitable for mammal watching on foot in rough terrain. It is reasonably powerful in terms of focal length and image quality and unbeatably lightweight. There is no question: I have to have it!

Now you understand why I am not shy to advertise my own report. And I promise: If I “win” that lens, that I believe has the potential of becoming “the mammal watcher’s dearest”, I write a review for this forum. 😉
