Giant anteater/Ornate titi monkey Colombia

Dear all

Although I have seen giant anteater it was through a scope and I am keen to see another. I will be in Colombia next year and wondered if anyone has reliable sites in the Villavicencio area?

Rob and Romy Jensen saw ornate titi at a site near Cumeral in a nearby finca? Has anyone been there since and is it still a reliable and possible to visit site?

Any other tips in the area?

Thanks in advance.

We had great views at Reserva Sokay in February 2025. Good luck!

Thanks Kenny. I presume that was a typo and you meant Zoque? Did you see much else there? Is it easy to visit and do you need a guide? There aren’t many details on the website.

Hi Steve, probably a typo – got it from my notebook and it’s likely phonetic! We had a guide as part of our tour but the owner accompanied us and the Titis were fairly easy to find and not bothered by us. Good luck!

I have had a reply to this but seem unable to approve it!

See my trip report of 2023 (Alex Schouten en Jeannette den Hertog). The Palmarum lodge (they recently changed the name into Merlin lodge) is a reliable place to see the Ornate Titi.

I haven’t seen an anteater last time I was in Colombia, but I stayed in Rancho Camana in Restrepo before going to Casanara. They know good sports for the Giant anteater, it was recomended to me by a french biologist living in Colombia for ten years. And I saw ornate titis in the Reserva Sokay, where I went with the guides of Rancho Camana. I only stayed one night, I guess two nights would be perfect to see the Anteater and the monkeys.

I shot a wildlife TV show recently in Colombia. We stayed at HATO MONTANA https://elencantodeguanapalo.com/hato-montana/ where we could film the giant ant eater. Absolutely amazing place with tons of other species. If you need any logistical help in Colombia for wildlife photo / video you can also reach out to colombianproject.com

Sorry, I just posted a comment and I can’t edit it.. I realise that HATO MONTANA is NOT in the Villavicencio area… Yet, we have also filmed there but not Giant Ant Eaters. We stayed at RANCHO CAMANA (https://maps.app.goo.gl/GgecBasfSRCgtarb6) were Ornate titis are visible (we shot an entire sequence nearby the ranch, close to the church)

I saw a Giant Anteater a couple of days ago near Villavicencio at El Silencio Reserve. We weren’t looking for them, but one practically walked right in front of us. We were at the reserve for a birding tour that I was guiding. Our groups have been to that reserve in the past and not seen them so not sure how reliable that spot is.
