Trip report – West Scottish Highlands, September 2026
I’m just back from a trip to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and Isle of Mull in Scotland, where I went in search of pine martens and otters. In the end I was unsuccessful in seeing both species (more context in the report), but managed to spot six other mammals, in addition to some highlights like tawny owl and basking shark.
Being 22 and in university, I thought this might have some useful info for fellow young (broke) mammal enthusiasts. While the original plan for the trip had been to drive, complications meant I had to exclusively get to and around one of the remotest reaches of the UK mainland on public transport. At the end of the report I discuss the feasibility of public transport for Highland mammalwatching – with some adjustments, to our route, I believe Ardnamurchan and Mull by bus could be an exceptionally affordable but excellent trip.
