Sumatra Mammal Trip Report Jul 2026 – Nick Buys

Sumatra delivered an outstanding mammal-watching experience, with encounters ranging from Sumatran Orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park to nocturnal treasures in Way Kambas. This Nature Travel Expeditions tour combined mammal watching with birding across three distinct regions, with a separate report covering the bird sightings. Despite the time shared between the two interests, excellent local guides, long days in the field and dedicated night drives and walks produced an impressive mammal list, including primates, squirrels, civets, bats and chevrotains. Sumatra is a rewarding destination for anyone serious about mammal watching.
