A short visit to Finland in a failed attempt to see a Wolverine. Did get some other cool mammals though!

Spending three nights at Eero’s can honestly be quite boring at times. Going without a single sighting between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. has almost become the norm, especially at the lake hide.

That big, blackish bear was there the complete season.

In the past (I visit the place now for 17 years), wolves and bears were really difficult to see at Eero’s place, especially during the summer. Wolves in particular were rarely, if ever, seen. However, for the past three or four years, wolves (actually only two being an alpha male and one of his daughters probably the new alpha female) have become fairly reliable, and bears are now almost guaranteed. This is a problem for the wolverines, especially at the forest hide. When wolves and bears are around, the wolverines tend to stay away.
Wolves together chase the wolverines and even try kill them. It is the reason why some of the them have scars.

Another ‘problem’ is that the bears eat almost all the food. In fact, the amount of bait provided is simply not sufficient for the bears.

Moving animals from lake to forest (plus the new, third place further away) and back in one night is also not exceptional.

But always be prepared for the unexpected! This summer, within just two hours, I spotted two wolves, a bear, a wolverine, and even a Eurasian lynx from the lake site!

    Best regards,
