Golden Jackal and Beavers in Hungary
Hi everyone,
I’m planning a trip to Hungary and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for reliable spots to see Golden Jackals or Beavers. I’d really appreciate any tips on good locations and the best time of day to look for them. If you’ve had any success seeing either species in the wild in Hungary, I’d love to hear about your experience.
Thanks in advance!

I actually managed to see 2 jackals in the Baltalon Felvidek National Park, after an extensive search.
I still got some days left so I will use the info on the map to try to see the beavers also.
Also to add some data, after asking a couple people here in Hungary there’s a place near Budapest named Haros-sziget (Haros island) in which people have seen both Jackals and Beavers.
Thanks Jon for putting my question on the Facebook group and Jan Ebr for the info -

Hi Bruno. I shared this to the European Mammalwatching group on Facebook and Jan Ebr replied with this. ..,
It’s pretty interesting to see how few observations of beavers are on iNat in Hungary – considering that it’s a very …. watery country – perhpas iNat is not that popular there? According to https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10344-024-01825-z there is a pretty healthy population nowadays – maps in the paper can also be used to guide the search.
For jackals, this paper https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0306489 has some nice maps.
