Japan Trip Report, April 2025

A three-week trip to Japan, focused in part on cultural sites, but with some interesting wildlife along the way. Featuring some great Japanese endemics such as Amami Rabbit, Japanese Macaque, Japanese Badger, Japanese Marten, Japanese Raccoon Dog (Tanuki), Japanese Squirrel, Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel and Japanese Serow.

    Thanks for another great report Ian! I love all of them for the mix of info and humour, you have a great knack of taking me along for the ride. This report was especially useful, since I love visiting Japan but usually only dedicate a day or two to mammal watching (the rest of the time I’m busy being a tourist). Now the Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel is moving up my bucket list! Hopefully I don’t get banished for admitting I’m a tourist… and, gasp, sometimes I even look at birds.

    Thank you very much for your kind words. The Japanese Giant Flying Squirrels are great – well worth going to see! They occur at other sites in Japan, but seem to be particularly abundant and visible at Nara.
