Malayan Tapir at Taman Negara

Because of my interest in tapirs, my biggest wish when visiting Malaysia was to see a Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus) in the wild. We went to Taman Negara to catch a glimpse and got in touch with Andrew Sebastian (ajsebastian@hotmail.com) to book a guide for a night at a hide. We were incredibly lucky: On the very first night in the forest with our local guides, we not only heard one or two tapirs roaming around our hide close to the salt lick, but I was also able to catch a glimpse of one animal. This was the absolute highlight of my visit and I will never forget it. The experience of staying overnight in the jungle was also really special, with the sound of tree frogs and geckos all around us. We also saw Malayan civets (Viverra tangalunga) and mouse deers on the second night.
