Mammoth rubbings in California boulders?

I am curious what people think of this curious phenomenon located with a state park in Sonoma County, California. The theory that explain how these rough boulders became highly polished in just certain places (mammoths used these rocks to scratch their itches) has bounced around for years. I am not sure if this theory is still considered the leading explanation.

I am not sure such polish can survive 10,000 years of erosion. Polishing by wind-blown sand seems more likely. But I’ve never seen these rocks despite having been in the area many times. I’ll definitely have a look next time.
