Musk Ox, Norway
Just a quick note: During a brief trip to Norway I tacked on a short excursion to Oppdal (Dovrefjell National Park) in order to look for Musk Ox. While you can go alone, I booked the tour through https://www.moskussafari.no/ because 1) I thought this increased the probability of finding musk ox (they have a 99% success rate) 2) this then allowed me to not rent a car and instead use public transport which was far cheaper (details below in case useful – you must email in advance if you want to travel in the guide’s car to the site) and 3) it was very reasonably priced (~65 USD pp). Trips meet at Oppdal station each morning at 10am through the summer, booked in advance on the site above. They can last up to about 7h, and can involve quite a bit of walking. I was guided by Erlend Ekeland (Al) who was absolutely brilliant, super enthusiastic and knowledgeable (I’m very glad I booked on and we had ace, prolonged views of the musk ox doing their thing (lots of sleeping, but also grazing, browsing and suckling) from a close but safe distance, crucially with no risk of disturbing them owing to Al’s expertise.
They also offer evening trips to look for moose (~90 USD pp) which I had somehow missed when I booked, else I would have tried to sort out joining one, too.
TRANSPORT INFO:
Oppdal is easy to reach from both Trondheim (2h) and Oslo (5h30). I booked all my travel through the Vy website (https://www.vy.no/) which was easy enough to use. I travelled from Oslo Airport on the RE10 to Lillehammer and then changed to the VY710 bus to Oppdal (note: there is a tight connection in Lillehammer for this, but as explained on the Vy website, the bus will wait in case the train is delayed). From Oppdal to Trondheim I took the VY710 bus.
