Arctic Foxes in Iceland 2025

Just a short note for people interested

We visited 3 sites mentioned by this forum in the past.

  1. Möðrudalur/Fjalladýrð: The arctic foxes are fed and only semi-wild. The den is just next to the guest houses and cottages, and viewing is pretty much guaranteed. We saw the 4 cubs multiple times during a one night stay. There is also a tamed/free roaming reindeer living on the farm.
  2. Heydalur in Westfjord: There is a wild fox living by the resort. It likes to hang around people. It came to our car for a long time in the evening.
  3. Malarrif Lighthouse in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Based on the ranger, this wild fox lives at the Lóndrangar Pillars. There are so many bird cliffs so it is truly arctic fox habitat. But we didn’t see it on our hike between the 2 parking lots. There are also many tourists.

One of the best places to see Arctic foxes in Iceland is Hornstandir. Of course, it’s also the most difficult to get to and nearly all the foxes that are regularly seen are habituated. But I would recommend Hornstrandir as they are (in theory) fully protected there and there are fewer tourists.
