First Trip to Japan (Honshu) in Nov/Dec – Advice on Target Species & Itinerary
Hi everyone,
I’m planning a 3-week family trip to Japan from mid-November to mid-December. This will be our first time there, so we are focusing exclusively on Honshu (planning for Tokyo, Kyoto, and we’re currently debating whether to include the Japanese Alps).
While we definitely want to experience the classic highlights and the trip won’t revolve entirely around mammal watching, I’m very keen to dedicate quality time to targeted early morning walks or night drives.
My main target species are:
-
Tanuki (Raccoon Dog)
-
Japanese Marten
-
Japanese Badger
-
Japanese Weasel
-
Japanese Giant / Dwarf Flying Squirrel
-
Asiatic Black Bear (though I realize they might be starting to hibernate by late Nov/Dec?)
- Any other Mustelides
My main questions for the group:
-
Are the Japanese Alps an absolute MUST to get a high probability of seeing these targets, or is it realistic to spot them closer to the classic “golden route” areas that we will be visiting anyway?
-
How does our specific timing (mid-Nov to mid-Dec) affect the activity levels and visibility of these mammals?
-
Local Contacts: Does anyone have recommendations for local guides, researchers, or contacts who can help arrange focused evening/night spotting sessions in Honshu?
Thanks so much in advance for any insights or contacts!
Best, Yuval
