Hawaii May 2026

Hey y’all,

Just got back from a friend’s wedding on the big island of Hawai’i on the Kona coast. This is a rapid dropoff to deep water and a great place for marine mammals!

I saw short-finned pilot whales*, pantropical spotted dolphins*, and common bottlenose dolphin* on a boat trip in some mixed species interactions. The rest of the week I saw also Hawai’ian monk seal (e) and Hawaiian hoary bat (e)*.

On the introduced mammal side, I saw feral goats, brown rat, and small Indian mongoose.
