Help from the Mammalwatching community for the Emas Nationalpark

Dear all

I am writing to ask for your support regarding a recent decision affecting access to Emas National Park.

As many of you know, the park has faced several challenges in recent years. The authorities have now decided to close the gate next to the Pousada do Gloria and require all visitors to enter and exit exclusively through the main gate.

Personally I am concerned that this change could have a significant negative impact on tourism. Under the new arrangement, visitors staying at the Pousada would lose approximately one hour each time they enter and leave the park. For mammalwatchers, this could mean losing around 30 minutes of the most valuable mammalwatching time. Birdwatchers would similarly lose important morning hours.

Emas National Park already faces challenges in attracting visitors because of its distance from airports and from other mammal- and birdwatching hotspots such as the Pantanal. I believe that restricting access in this way could create an additional barrier, discourage potential visitors, and ultimately harm both local tourism and the long-term interests of the park itself.

If you share these concerns, I would be very grateful if you could write a short, personal email explaining how this decision would affect your own experience as a visitor and mammalwatcher. Please send your message to:

ouvidoria@icmbio.gov.br

Please also feel free to forward this message to friends or fellow birdwatchers who may wish to add their voices.

I sincerely hope that, together, we can encourage the authorities to reconsider this decision and find a solution that supports both conservation and sustainable tourism.

Thank you very much for your support.

Best
Sophie
