Short Kenya Trip Advice

Hello!

I’m traveling to Ghana in December/Jan and I was able to arrange my flights so I have four days in Nairobi on the way back. I’m still pretty new to mammalwatching and I’ve never been to Africa before so I’m a little overwhelmed and not sure what I should focus on with such limited time. So far I know I want to spend some time in Nairobi National Park (not sure if I should do two days or one, and also wondering whether a night safari would be worth it?) And I would like to target Giant Forest Hog as well. If anyone has any recommendations for places to check out, guides, or any general tips I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Have you read my recent report https://www.mammalwatching.com/community-post/bongos-bats-birders-kenya-september-2026/. Go to the Aberdares for the Giant Forsst Hogs for a night or two. It’s a great park. And just a few hours from Nairobi.

Yes, Aberdares is the place for Giant Forest Hog. Laikipia is on the Eastern side of the range and has excellent options that you might want to consider instead of Nairobi NP. Solio Ranch if you want a lot! of rhinos or just Ol Pejeta for everything you have at Nairobi plus some of the dry country species from the north and east of the country. I would do that as you’d have a base for your stay with short drives to the places. Laikipia outside of the reserves can be excellent for night drives too. I have seen many Aardwolves that way for instance.

I agree with both of the above comments; Laikipia also has striped hyena and the Aberdares has colobus and a small chance of mountain bongo. I can also highly recommend Ol Pejeta. But in just four days it will be a squeeze to fit it all in! Anyway, have a great trip.
