A short report on Iberian lynx watching in Andujar.

Here is a short report about a recent trip I took to Andujar in the Sierra Morena mountains of southern Spain. There are many reports about this area on the site, so I’ve just provided a brief update on the current lynx watching (and general wildlife watching) scene.

Everyone makes it look so easy to see Iberian Lynx there! My family spent two full days in the summer of 2023 looking with a guide but to no avail…didn’t feel like posting a trip report without the lynx. I wasn’t aware of hides at the time but sounds like I need to go back and try that route.

Hi Greg, it’s a lot harder to see lynx in the summer because they mostly rest during the day and move at night. Full disclosure: I’ve been several times in the summer and not seen lynx – and not written about it. I’m sure the hides change the equation as you can use them in the evening. If you do visit again just make sure you avoid April which is when the pilgrimage takes place.

I have mixed feelings about Andujar. It’s cool that the Lynx are doing so well, but the area is frustrating. How did it happen in Europe that we have such huge natural landscapes cut up into closed private lands? I am used to this being the norm in the Americas, but here on this side we mostly do better …

I was there a month after you (February 2025) and used the hide at Gato Clavo for three afternoon sessions (though I did not stay at their hotel but maybe should have). I saw lynx all three days in the hide at close range. First afternoon we watched one catch three different rabbits over the four hour period and second day we saw a group of four! In mornings I drove the roads with a guide but could have done it on my own (I have been here before). I would have liked to get into El Encinarejo but my guide did not offer and I didn’t know it could be arranged through Gato Clavo. We saw mouflon on their land from the public farm road but it was very distant.

A group of four lynx – that’s amazing. What was the social breakdown – was it a mother and young? Just to be clear, Gato Clavo offered access to a ranch adjacent to El Encinarejo. If you want to visit El Encinarejo you can book directly with them online.

Charles, thanks for clarification about the private estate you went to. I believe the four lynx were an adult female and three juveniles, not sure if they were littermates or one was a year younger than other two?
