alligator River NWR: Road closures?

I was thinking about visiting but it’s a long drive from my house (over 10 hours) and they seem to have a rather long list of closures mentioned

Maybe closures are normal for this refuge? Just curious if these are likely to effect the outcome of a visit?

Based on the map that you sent, the road closures are the normal ones. I visited a couple of years ago and the same roads were closed.

Continuing…. you drive the red road (marked “wildlife drive”). And also some of the black roads (marked “open to public”). Long curve road, link road, grouse road and bear road were all great. They form a rectangle and you can drive around it again and again and see different things each time. We saw red wolves and tons of black bear. Note however that I was there late November (thanksgiving). I got a cool picture of a huge black bear at the corner of grouse road and bear road, with the bear right under the “bear road” sign. We also tried Sawyer lake road, the creek cut wildlife trail and some of the other roads but the best was the long curve – grouse – bear – link circuit. I was told by a local that the Pungo unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife refuge was even better for bear, but I did not go there myself. It’s not too far from Alligator River NWR.

Thanks it says there is no stopping allowed at bear grouse and long curve road right now. Not sure how one observes wildlife without stopping. I guess I could get out and walk the roads. Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife refuge sounds like it’s worth a look.
