Asking advice for mammalwatching in the Vosges region in France

Dear Mammalwatchers,

This August (2026) I will be going to the Vosges region for mammalwatching with my dad. We will be staying at Gérardmer. There are a few things that I would like to know if someone has some advice or suggestions for a few things. We will be focussing on hiking/walking and going on night drives.

  1. Does anyone know or have a reliable spot for the dormouse species (Edible Dormouse, Garden Dormouse & Hazel Dormouse)? I would love to see any of these three (or all three). If there will not be anyone that could help us for a reliable spot we will try to hike/walk suitable habitat at night with my thermal, would this be a good strategy?
  2. Does anyone know a good spot for bats in the Vosges region (a church where they are known to roost during the day for example)?
  3. If there are some more tips for mammalwatching or locations that we should check out they are more than welcome!
