Costa Rica/Panama short notice
Hello! We are going to Panama in a week, but our guide just cancelled. We have 5 or possibly 6 nights depending on flight times to go to CR or Panama. Any recommendations on guides or where to stay that won’t take crazy amount of travel time from the airports? Maximum 5 hours from the airport if possible. Thank you for your advice!

Hello. Yes sorry that happened to you! I’d highly recommend the guide Venkat Sankar and I used in Costa Rica- Vino De Backer. See our trip report here: https://www.mammalwatching.com/wp-content/uploads/CR_TR_AMVS_Mar22-compressed.pdf
He speaks fluent English, has his own vehicle and is extremely knowledgeable about the whole country and I think has guided in Panama before as well. He’s great at finding/identifying mammals, especially bats which he has permits to mist net for if that’s of interest.
His Whatsapp# is +506 8502 7056 and his email is vino.monteverde@gmail.com. I already checked with him and he is available.
Good luck and all the best!

That’s frustrating! You can see a lot in Panama without a guide. The Pipeline road is an hour from the airport and all the forest around the Gamboa area is good – lots of trip reports. Various accommodation options too. You can add on a trip to the Canopy Lodge for a few other species or also go up to the Los Quetzales lodge for Cacomistles etc (might be more like 8 hours from the airport though). I have never used a guide in Panama – it is very easy.
