Thank you so much! I am just planning a family trip to South Florida. Did you consider visiting further north west of the Big Cypress Reserve?

As far as I know, most of Big Cypress N of the 41 is proper wilderness with difficult (or at least time-consuming) access. Turner River Rd might be an option, but I’m afraid I don’t know what species are likely there. Outside of BCNP, the Janes Scenic Dr in Fakahatchee Strand seems well worth a visit, with chances of Black Bear, River Otter, and with a lot of luck – ‘Everglades’ Mink and Puma.

As a long-time South Florida resident, your report was very interesting. As a Florida Trail Association member I do plenty of hiking in Big Cypress, and some of the backcountry trail maintenance weeks afford an opportunity to see elusive wildlife (about a dozen of our group saw a Florida Panther near Nobles Camp north of Alligator Alley last year.) Black Bear and White-tailed Deer are common enough, though the bear (and panthers and Bobcats) are more evident through tracks and scat. I’ll be doing a post on Arthur R. Marshall National Wildlife Refuge where I finally saw one of the resident Bobcats with her three cubs last week. About 25 years ago I saw a Spotted Skunk in Tradewinds Park in Broward, and I saw Round-tailed Muskrats in Green Cay and Pine Glades Natural Area in Palm Beach. We’ve seen several Everglades Mink in Fakahatchee on Janes Scenic Drive. We were once lucky enough to have a females Manatee with her tiny calf at our dock in Ft. Lauderdale. Good luck on your future journeys down here!

Glad you enjoyed the report, and thanks for the informative reply! Jealous of the Round-tailed Muskrat sightings – though I imagine you’ve looked far more times than I have, haha.
