Georgia and Armenia, August 2025

A three-week trip to Georgia and Armenia. Not dedicated and not the best time of the year, but my first mammal watching trip, with a few nice species and some practical information.

Very nice trip report! I think that this region had a lot of potential but sort of ruined its own reputation through overhunting. Recently met some Georgian people that told me that hunting is still a very important part of their culture, and that they do not expect this to change anytime soon. I really hope that it does change as this magnificent landscape with some leopards and bears would be a dream mammalwatching destination.

Thanks, Flemming! Yes, hunting/poaching is unfortunately still an issue there. But at least in Vashlovani it has decreased since the border police and rangers started to work together. I can only hope we’ll see the same trend in the rest of the country soon. Changing traditions and the mindset behind is always extremely difficult.
