Hong Kong trip report March 2026

Jon convinced me to put together a trip report of my 5 week work trip to Hong Kong. Despite working I spend nearly every night doing walking in the park near my accommodation. I saw 14 mammals (12 lifers), 125 birds (80 lifers), and 21 herps (20 lifers). Mammal highlights include masked palm civet, small Indian civet, 2 sharp-toothed ferret badgers, fruit bats, and Indochinese humpback dolphin (the pink ones). I really wanted to see leopard cat, but sadly didn’t encounter one.

      It’s a pleasure. I hope others can find it useful. The dolphins are still clinging on, but their long term persistance is under serious threat. There’s estimated to be only 40 individuals left around Hong Kong, compared to about 200 in the early 2000s. There’s a host of factors causing their population decline, including construction around their foraging grounds on Lantau Island, commerical/local fishing, pollutants, and general habitat degredation. The water conditions there seem to cause early mortality, individuals live half as long as other populations.
