Mammals/hiking tour out of Las Vegas

Dear Fellows MWs,

will be for a work trip in Vegas next week and I was wondering if any of you can suggest a good mammal/hiking guide or tour for a day trip!

Thanks!

Hello Francesco, I’m based around Las Vegas and although I don’t know any guides, I can give you some sites where I see mammal species.

Hi B. Kao, I read your report 🙂

I’ve never been in the area and I won’t self drive, this time. I found Dave from “the wild sights” – hopefully it works out with him as a guide!

        Hi Francisco,

As blackwatch. said, Hemenway Park is the best stop for bighorns, although they might not be around in winter. I’ve only gone in August.

Clark County Wetlands Park has North American beaver in the entrance pond, and coyotes – I’ve seen them when it’s still dark, before dawn.

Sunset Park is the most mammal-rich place around here – Fulvous Pocket Gopher mounds are everywhere and more often than not I find at least one surfaced. The desert portion has the Black-Tailed Jackrabbit, Desert Cottontail (guaranteed), White-Tailed Antelope Squirrel, Round-Tailed Ground Squirrel (still in torpor this time of year), Coyote, and even Bobcat (found one spotlighting at night).

This is not a good time of year for small rodents or bats, unfortunately.

I just looked up if the sheep are there in the winter and they are and when it comes to spotting them the spring, fall and winter is the easiest time to spot them as that’s when they are at lower elevations.

Hi Francisco I have been in the area twice and the only places I can think of are red rock canyon national conservation area which I have been to and it’s about 15 miles west from downtown Las Vegas. The other place Is one I was told about last year when I was out in Vegas and it’s called hemenway park and it’s in Boulder City and even though I haven’t been there I was told it’s totally worth going to the park and it’s mostly because it’s where you are most likely to see bighorn sheep. And hopefully this helped you out.
