My Big Cat Year – A few stressfull days in Colombia but with a big reward!

After Bolivia, the trip continued with 4 days to Mirador el Roble in Colombia. A rare Northern Tiger Cat has been showing up there regularly for over 3 years. It is definitely not guaranteed but you do have a good chance to observe it. As part of My Big Cat Year, this was a great opportunity to see this stunning wildcat species. The Big Cat Year is not just about spotting wild cats. It is also about habitat and wildlife conservation. The aim is to support a project/organization in every country visited. With regard to Colombia, we have made a donation towards Proaves Colombia.

    Looks a really great year so far. Thanks for sharing the trip report. Do you have any plans to see the Margay? Interested in knowing where you are heading for that (if you are).

      Travyn, there is an area close to Amboro NP, a private area, called Bosque del Jose, and it occurs there often on camera traps. I spend two nights searching there, but did not find it. Very difficult to find a site with regular Margay sightings, I have not heard of any yet …

        Hi,

        Another question. You are heading to Brazil next month. Good luck with your quest. Do you have any local guides helping you locate the Southern Tiger Cat or Pampas Cat? Heading to Brazil mid next year so could be very handy to put into the mix. Cheers

          Travyn, thanks, in Brazil I am joining a general mammal watching trip by a dutch organization, focusing on Emas, South- and North Pantanal. I would be very happy already with a Jaguarundi (which I missed this year in Bolivia) and a Pampas Cat … difficult enough … we wil see what we get!!

    I think for me it is a 5-10 year challenge to photograph so many feline species. The number of small cats in South America seems to be increasing…
