My Big Cat Year – A very challenging trip to Bolivia!

The trip to Bolivia was a hard one for me, covering many different areas and a lots of kms by air and road. I love the country and its people and last year I had been here and had a very successful month. This year we had to work even harder to get some results but in the end we got Jaguar, Ocelot and Puma and many other interesting wildlife. Also on behalf of The Big Cat Year, we have made a donation to both Armonia Bolivia and Bosque de José.

    You sure put in the hours. Glad you got the species you got. Will you look for jaguarundi anywhere else for the rest of the year?

      Sebastian, thanks! Will be in Brazil, Emas, South and North Pantanal in the 2nd and 3rd week of oktober, so still some chances!!

    I love your quest and also used to follow it closely (before kids caught up with my field time!).
    Massive congratulations on your incredible success with these sightings—felines are never easy.
    I’m really curious: given your success and experiences, do you have any plans or ideas to contribute for wild cat conservation in the future? For instance, contributing to small cat initiatives or supporting community-led coexistence projects in the regions you visit? Would love to hear your thoughts on how we as mammal watchers can best give back to these species!”

      That is such a fantastic comment and question Manuel! There are fantastic small cat conservation organizations out there (Andean Cat Alliance, Urban Fishing Cat Project, Black-footed Cat Working Group, etc — please message me if you are looking for a particular species organization). You could also always donate to Panthera as restricted funding to their small cat program. Ethical, responsible, small cat ecotourism is also a huge help for the small cats.     Sophie and Manuel, many thanks!!! Not sure yet what the future will bring, I do have some plans and one is to spend a part of my time and energy in future in the area of conservation. In what form and what kind of activities, I am not sure yet. Many thanks again!! Marc

      Sebastian red your question actually much better then I did! And I fully agree with him, locally there are many interesting programs. In addition to his comment, also worthwile is to have a look at the many interesting projects and researchers (some also related to Wildcat species) who have applied in the past for Future for Nature, https://futurefornature.org/. Future For Nature is a Dutch non-profit organization that empowers young conservationists worldwide to protect species and habitats through awards, mentoring, and a global community. They do a good screening and that helps.
