RESERVA CAÑADA EL CARMEN, CHACO, PARAGUAY

We are Karina and Andrey (aka Travelling Zoologists), a couple of field zoologists who also work as guides, expedition managers and photographers. We have moved to
Paraguay and continue to explore the last, well-hidden pieces of true wilderness that this country preserves. Here we would like to share with you some information about
one of the little natural jewels that we particularly enjoyed, Reserva Natural Cañada El Carmen. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information about this place and wildlife
watching in Paraguay in general. We run guided tours focusing on mammal and bird watching and offer a variety of tailor made itineraries including but not limited to child-friendly tours. We are always happy to provide free travel advice for independent travellers.

This sounds like a great spot!

This sounds really cool – I appreciate the effort to spread the word about a place with good mammalwatching on foot. Do you guys think it would be worthwhile for someone without a thermal scope (or even a very high-powered spotlight)?

Sure, now in Cañada both waterholes have dim lights so the thermal there is not needed, a regular torch is enough

Oh, perfect! I’m asking them about the price. Unfortunately my budget is very low, but my partner and I would love to be able to visit later this month. Also unsure about transportation. Do you know if any buses take that route? I’m also experienced with hitchhiking, but probably prefer something more reliable.

So I just heard back from them by email (after only a couple days), and they gave me a very useful information sheet, including pricing and transportation details. The price looks very affordable (similar to what you’d pay for a youth hostel in Brazil or Argentina these days, though more rustic of course), and they included contact information for a couple bus companies. Looking hopeful!
