Seeking advice on Mustelids in the UK

Hi folks,

I’m spending a couple of weeks in Scotland (mainly) and UK in early October, and seeking tips on where to see smaller mustelids. I’m sorted for otters, pine marten and badgers but would especially grateful for any recent intell on good sites for any Mustela sp- stoat, least weasel and polecat. Many thanks in advance

Cheers,

Luke

Hi Luke, I saw both weasel and stoat on Skye on a 2 day trip there last July. Both were brief sightings of the animals crossing the road, so more of a tick than a satisfactory mammalwatching experience. However, I suspect that’s the norm for these species. I don’t know if I just got lucky or if this hit rate is not unusual. I spoke to one local who said stoats were fairly common on the island. Hope that helps.

Hi Luke. The only place I know for stoats is Mount Grace Priory in Yorkshire. We had great views in June when they have young, and it’s certainly known as the best time. I’ve not read anything about how likely viewings are at other times of the year.

We also saw a stoat/weasel dash over the road on Skye, but too fast and far away to even be sure which it was. I’d love to know of a consistent spot for polecats! Good luck with your trip.

Thanks indeed Shortclaws. Ive seen the famous Attenborough film of course but I couldnt find any reference to the stoats online post-Covid. Your sighting was June this year (or recently?). Im not there in June but we’ll plan a visit if I can confirm theyre still a reasonable chance. Thanks a stack.

Hi Luke. Our visit was several years ago, pre-COVID. But I think you could contact them directly and ask, as I remember we did and got some useful info. The very best chance for sighting is to actually stay at the accommodation there, giving access outside of public hours.
