South Africa July/August 2026: Kruger, Cape and Karoo

There are many trip reports about South Africa, but in my opinion there is so much to see and discover in South Africa that there are never too many. Our 3,5 week family holiday was somewhere in between a family holiday and a “hardcore” mammalwatching trip. We visited some new or less known locations (for instance around Dullstroom) and saw an incredible number of 82 different mammal species (including some feral and (re)introduced species). We also saw some very rare (behaviour of) mammals like Brown Hyena, Striped Polecat, Aardvark, Honey Badger, two species of Otter, a pack of hunting wild dogs and 6 lions eating a Zebra.

I hope you enjoy the trip report (my first on this website) and that it helps you with planning your (family) holiday to South Africa. This trip proved for me that mammal watching can be (easily) integrated in a great self-organised family holiday!!!
