Spirit Bear Cubs
Just throwing out a “hail Mary” in case anyone has heard/knows of anyone who is going to try to see/photograph the Spirit Bear cubs I’ve seen some posts about. I’m guessing they were seen in the Great Bear Rain Forest in Canada but that’s about all I really know. I’d love to join a small group that is going there this Spring before they get too big. Any info greatly appreciated! Thanks, Becky

My wife and I travelled the Great Bear Rainforest last September on a small yacht named Island Roamer. We went from Terrace to Bella Bella. The mammal watching was great including wolves howling on the shore where we had anchored overnight. More specifically we had a great day out with Marven and had a fantastic sighting of a Spirit bear (no cubs). We were on a salmon river with the salmon running so there was a clear attraction for the bear.

Hey Rebecca, so i have done multiple trips to the GBR over the years and know the operators who run it, like Marvin and Tim Irvin, who is who you generally book through for the multi-day tours. while spirit bears can be a common sight, cubs are exceptionally rare, and most cub photos are from a few select years in the past, usually from Paul Nicklen. and spirit cubs have not really been seen on normal tours in years. However, last year we had a lot of normal black bear cubs! as for time of year definitely September, really the only time to go so recommend reaching out to tim or marvin and seeing if you can get a spot as they can go fast!

Hi Rebecca, I have been to the Great Bear Rain Forest some years ago to see the spirit bear and it is truely a must! The guy who take you to the place from Hartley Bay is Marven Robinson, check on Instagram Gitga’at Spirit Tours. Not sure if you can reach directly to him or need to organise the tour via a local tour operator. Hope this helps!
