Summer 2025 – Katmai National Park Wolverine (and other critter) Sightings

Hi everybody!

As you may or may not know, I work most summers as a Park Ranger at Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park, Alaska.

I’d imagine most people here know Brooks Camp as the place to go for incredible Brown Bear sightings, and it definitely is. I’ve posted before about some of the other species that can be spotted/seen around camp but last summer (2025) was especially good for critters.

We had WAY more wolf sightings that usual. In my past two seasons working there I had seen a total of three wolves. 2025, I saw 19.

I cannot emphasize enough how great Katmai and Brooks Camp are for spotting Canadian Lynx. Prior to working there I had seen a total of three lynx in my life. Every summer I have worked there I have blown way past that number. For 2025 I had 49 lynx sightings (some of these were definitely the same animals spotted more than once).

And now to the reason for posting this (credit where its due, this post was Jon’s suggestion), the wolverine. In my past years working there, there had been one or two wolverines spotted by employees (including me seeing one in 2024) but these sightings had always been quick and fleeting glimpses and never documented.

2025, however, was a completely different story. I, personally, spotted 3 one of which stayed long enough for some photos. One of our maintenance employees also had three sightings, one with cell phone video and one with a photo. A pair of visitors encountered one while walking near some of the employee housing (photos and video). Rumor had it there were three more sightings by visitors and there were at least two more sightings by employees. All of these sightings were within walking distance of Brooks Camp proper.

No way to know for sure but if this keeps up, Brooks Camp could become a pretty reliable spot for wolverine sightings.

Happy hunting
