Sunda Clouded Leopards: Some Remarkable Videos
Mike Gordon, Borneo mammal guide par excellence, sent me a couple of cell phone clips of Sunda Clouded Leopards in Borneo. What they lack in high definition they make up for in bizarre behaviour! There must be so much crazy footage of mammals on the phones of guides and locals across Borneo … indeed the world.
The first shows a leopard taking on a Slow Loris – and losing! – in the Danum Valley. The cat’s ability to hang from a such a thin branch and battle the loris blows my mind. We don’t know who filmed this – other than it was one of the guides in the Danum – so if anyone does know please tell me and I can credit him or her. Normally I would check before sharing something like this but apparently it is everywhere in Borneo already and is potentially interesting to scientists. Also – if I am honest – it is really very very cool.
This second video is from this morning. Mike was guiding a Royle Safaris trip in Deramakot and came across a female clouded leopard out for a stroll with a Malayan Porcupine. The video was taken by Mike’s driver, Norman Dennis, who is not only lucky but apparently the best driver Mike has ever worked with. A name to keep in mind if you are planning a Borneo trip.
