Tangjiahe mammals trip in May 2025

In early May 2025, we visited the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve.

May is the beginning of summer there. It is not the best time for watching some mammals in Tangjiahe, but the berries are ripe at this time, so it is better for find the Masked palm civet. In my 4 days trip, I met the Masked palm civets many time per night near the in the park.

I saw the Eurasian otter twice nearby the hydroelectric power station, but it too fast for take photo. At night, I met the Tawny fish owl in the same area. In the daytime maybe the only mammals I can find is the Tibetan macaques. They are very normal along the main road. The most famous mammal in Tangjiahe is Takin. But in May, they only appear in the evening. In the daytime, the go back to the high altitude areas. The best areas for watching Takins in near Caijiaba, in the grassland. And in the evening, I saw many Chinese Gorals and Reeves’s muntjacs. At the time I was waiting for the Takin near Caijiaba, a Serow appeared in the grassland, this is rare here.
