Trip Report – Pangolins & Other Mammals of Ghana Tour – Royle Safaris – March 2025
In March 2025 Royle Safaris followed up on our 2024 scouting trip to Ghana and ran our first annual dedicated mammalwatching small group tour to Ghana. The trip was led by the renowned Dr. Charles Foley who worked with the amazing local guide Robert Naktor and his team in country. The trip also benefited from Martin Royle who joined the trip for several days.
The trip was fantastically successful with a huge 55 species of mammals including an incredible Black-bellied Pangolin (our attempts for white-bellied pangolin were scuppered by a huge storm which curtailed our best chance), Buffon’s Kob, Kintampo Rope Squirrel, Red-flanked Duiker, Green Monkey, White-thighed Colobus, West African Potto (helping make up a total of 13 primate species), Pel’s anomalure, the recently described Benin Tree Hyrax and many others.
As well as this incredible total of mammals we also had 139 species of birds (many West African endemics including the amazing and major birders bird – yellow-headed picathartes) and 9 species of reptile (including a couple of very nice snakes) and even a small sample of amphibians seen.
The trip visited various forests including Atewa, Bobiri, Picathartes forest, Kakum National Park and Baobeng Fiema Sanctuary as well as spending days and nights on safari in the Miombo savanna of Mole National Park. We also travel east of the Volta River to see species which are only found on this side of the river.
We will be repeating the trip to Ghana next March (2026) and there are currently 3 places available on this small group tour. The trip will once again have the expertise of Robert Naktor (possibly the greatest pangolin finder in the world) and also Ewan Davies (one of the mammalwatching communities best tour leaders) which mean you will be in the best possible hands when it comes to seeing as many of West Africa’s best mammal species (with a major focus on the two pangolin species which make Ghana’s forests so special).
