Trip Report – Qinghai Tibetan Mammals Tour – Royle Safaris – July-August 2025

Royle Safaris was once again back in China during the summer of 2025 for our now annual mammalwatching group tour to the Tibetan Plateau. With another group of intrepid mammalwatchers and our expert team of local guides we headed to various valleys and locations in the province of Qinghai and explored the rich grasslands and rocky escarpments in search of some of Central Asia’s most iconic mammals.

This report is largely compiled by our local guide and contains some great pictures and an overview of the mammal sightings enjoyed on the trip. Please note the quality of the pictures in this report is a result of most of our clients on this particular trip not having top of the range cameras like many of our other trips.

The trip resulted in an impressive 26 species of mammals (in fact this is a record haul of mammals from our Qinghai group tours), which is a huge total for the harsh habitat of the Tibetan plateau and highlights including snow leopard, Pallas’s cat, Eurasian lynx, Tibetan wolves, Tibetan dwarf hamster, Tibetan antelope and wild yak!

Royle Safaris will be running this trip again in both 2026 and 2027 (dates for both tours are 26th July – 9th August), both of these trips are confirmed to run and we have 3 places still available on our 2026 which can be booked as a last minute departure (please note that for 2026 many nationalities including nearly all European nations, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can enter China visa free and so making it far easier to book last minute trips here).
