Trip Report – Qinghai (Valley of the Cats) Mammalwatching Tour – Royle Safaris – Augst 2023

Royle Safaris was back in China in the summer of 2023, after so long being closed to tourism we were back with a group of intrepid mammalwatchers and our expect team of local guides in Qinghai. This is a high altitude province in China and home to many of the Tibetan plateau speciality species.

This report was written by one of our clients (Stuart Chapman) and contains some great pictures and a breakdown of the day by day activities, sightings and an overview of the locations visited.

The trip resulted in an impressive 23 species of mammals, which is a huge total for the harsh habitat of the Tibetan plateau and highlights including snow leopard, Pallas’s cat (including 4 at once!), Tibetan blue bear, steppe polecat, Tibetan antelope and wild yak!

Royle Safaris will be running this trip again in 2024 (dates 26th July – 9th August 2024) and currently have some bookings, but still good availability for anyone wishing to join this trip.
