Trip Report – Sichuan Mammals Tour – Royle Safaris – March 2025 (Group 2)

As you will have seen on a previous post Royle Safaris ran several trips in Sichuan looking for mammals in spring 2025, three were private tours and we don’t have trip reports for them and then two were group tours and we have already posted the trip report for the first trip and here is our second trip report. This was a trip which was successful in seeing Giant Panda, as well as Asiatic Black Bear, Chinese Mountain Cat and many other targeted species. This is the short summary of the group trip as well as our sightings log of which animals were seen and where they were seen.

This trip visited our special panda location in the Wolong Greater Ecosystem as well as, Labahe Natural Nature Reserve, the grasslands of Rouergai on the Tibetan plateau and the very famous and great reserve of Tangjiahe, there was also a side trip to a forest near Pingwu which has a habituated group of monkeys that we also visited.

The trip finished with a total of 41 species of mammals seen, with key species being Giant Panda, Chinese Red Panda, Sichuan Takin, Northen Hog Badger, Golden Snub-nose Monkey, Asiatic Black Bear, Chinese Mountain Cat, two species of musk deer (Alpine & Forest Musk Deer) & Tibetan Gazelle. The trip also had some luck with smaller species including seeing Indochinese Short-tailed Shrew, South China Field Mouse & Indomalayan Niviventer. For more sightings please see the below list.

Both of our group tours are currently fully booked for 2026 now and so there is currently no availability to join trips, however we can look to accommodate private tours (subject to availability) if anyone are interested. We have started getting bookings on our 2027 groups now also. Please just email me direct at info@royle-safaris.co.uk for more information on how to join groups for 2027 or look into the possibility of a private tour in 2026.
