Where to go on the last African safari

Hello,

My wife and I have made several wonderful trips to Africa over the last years. Now with age, we plan for the last safari. We are looking for a shared 2-3 week tour with not too much tourists around. We have a general interest in all mammals and birds but a weak spot for cats (specially serval and caracal that we have missed so far). Any suggestions of regions/parks to visit and recommended operators (preferable local)?

Regards, Svante

I have made several (5+) African trips (mostly in Kenya but also Uganda) with Anthony from Entice Africa Safaris. His website if interested is https://enticeafricasafaris.com/ He is local (Kenyan), has good contacts & has always been willing to arrange a tour to my interests. (I also LOVE the big cats!) I have arranged private tours because I like the flexibility, the ability to adjust when we go out/come back for lunch or stay out all day/photography interests & his prices have always seemed fair. Let me know if you have any more specific questions/concerns.

    Hi, Svante,

I have already posted this comment once but it did not appear even after a few hours so let’s hope this is not a duplicate…

My wife and I saw several servals in Tanzania earlier this year. I can highly recommend Safari Consultants, they are Africa specialists based in UK but with clients all over the world. I suggest you speak to Rob Slater and mention my name.

Caracal are harder, as I am sure you know. West Coast NP (South Africa) is a good place to try, especially during August and September when the Postberg section is open. You could also look into the Cape peninsula and the Urban Caracal Project. But we finally caught up with one at the delightful Mosaic Lagoon Lodge, which is close to a number of nature reserves, including Walker Bay, and is also a good base for whale-watching at Hermanus and Gansbai. The lodge has extensive grounds and caracal are seen frequently.

I have not including any weblinks in case that is the reason it did not post last time…

Good luck and have a great trip!

I cannot think of a more impressive place for a last safari than Zakouma National Park in Chad. The sheer volume and variety of mammal and birds is astounding including West African lions and serval. I was there in 2018 and John Weir posted a very comprehensive trip report here. I also have photos at http://www.biodiversityphoto.com but did not do a trip report then as John had already posted. We did have a nightime encounter with a serval sitting behind a lion and also lions feeding on a Kordofan giraffe. Few tourists. You can try contacting Busanga safaris as to possibilities.

Have a memorable trip wherever you end up,

I agree Zakouma is epic and we saw multiple Serval every night there. Has to be the best place for that species. You can also have a good shot at Caracal if you include a trip to the wonder Ouadi Rime reserve to see the Addax and Oryx. See my report from 2023
