Latest Observations & previous highlights

Update (2026 Feb. 7.): 774 species seen total (329 in the wild and 672 in captivity). As I look through my old diaries, my list keeps growing. Just back from Svalbard where added polar bears (7, also observed unsuccessful hunt on reindeer), Svalbard reindeer, blue whale, fin whale, Atlantic walrus, beluga, bearded seal and harbour seal to this list. Off to the UAE soon.

I am a Hungarian zoologist and started my carrier as a big cat keeper at the Budapest Zoo at the age of 14. Then (in 1996) I joined the expeditions of the Hungarian Natural History Museum and worked for their Mammals Collection for 4 years. I was a head keeper in the Rare Species Conservation in Kent, United Kingdom then moved to the United Arab Emirates and worked as a zoo manager in the Al Mayya Sanctuary, Fujairah until 2022. Here I got involved in marine research and established the first comprehensive study on cetaceans in the Emirate of Fujairah. Published more than 2200 of my own images, I have authored hundreds of popular and scholarly articles (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Balazs-Buzas-2). I also occasionally act as a producer for Joel Sartore’s National Geographic Photo Ark.
