A pretty wild photo (by volunteer Ralph Stewart) from The Nature Conservancy’s Silver Creek Preserve. A few fish were killed during research there this summer to determine growth and health of the population.
And when the stomachs were examined, it appears the brown trout are keying in on montane voles.
Not quite like the dainty fly imitations that some of us spend hours casting to these fish!
There was a vole explosion on the preserve this year. The trout are well known by anglers to gorge during hatches of mayflies and caddis flies. This summer they are gulping rodents. It would be something to see.
