North American River Otter in Long Island Sound

Hi all,

Just wanted to post a first for me.  I was at Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich this morning around 8am and saw a North American River Otter swimming and fishing about a 1/4 mile out into Long Island Sound!  It was headed in an east southeast direction.  This was first time I’d seen an otter in CT and a river otter in salt water.  I also met a birder who said an American Mink was seen recently along the edge of the large pond on the island, also a nice mammal.  I guess the waters in the sound are pretty clean:-)  Attached are a couple of poor shots I took.

Looks like a seal head and flipper.

Yes, it does kind of a little. But it definitely was an otter. You can see the tail and face in some of the other photos. I saw it dive several times and the long body and tail were obvious:-)

Don’t know of this is still live, but my wife and I saw a river otter about 1.5 miles off the beach just south of the Oyster Bay inlet. We, including the two golden retrievers are traveling on our boat, M/V Virginia Lee, and 1970 wooden Grand Banks 36 Classic, from our home port in Kent Narrows, Maryland on up to somewhere. Today is July 22. 2021
    Cheers
