Gabon Wildlife Adventure – Royle Safaris – July 2022 Trip Report

In the summer of 2022 Royle Safaris returned to Gabon after the covid-19 pandemic. We ran three back to back trips to see the wonderful wildlife of this wonderful country. This is the trip report from the third of these three trips. This tour (like all of our Gabon Wildlife Adventure group tours) was focused around some specialists of Gabon, including Mandrills, Lowland Gorillas, Forest Elephants, Central African Slender- nosed Crocodiles and other wildlife. Many of these targets as well as many more were all seen on this trip. We visited two protected areas for our wildlife watching, first the incredible and iconic Lope National Park, home to large populations of mandrills as well as many other primates, duiker, pangolins, African golden cats and many forest elephants. the second location is the coastal park of Laongo, where we would track habituated Lowland gorillas and also cruise the waterways of Akaka, a hotbed of Central African wildlife. This trip had some very cool sightings of rare mammals which are not often seen at all, including black-footed mongoose and African manatee. These sightings helped us to reach a total of 42 species of mammals recorded (including 10 species of primates) and an impressive 133 species of birds, 10 species of reptiles, and 4 fish species. Please read our trip report from this trip and if you have any questions or would like to know how you can join our 2023 Gabon Wildlife Adventure, contact me direct or visit our website (www.royle-safaris.co.uk).
