Common hamsters in Meidling Cemetery, Vienna, June 2025

I visited the cemetery on 20 June this year.  Thanks to everyone who has posted reports here previously – these were essential reading.

My first search was 8.30-10.30am, mainly in the eastern half of the cemetery.  I saw no hamsters but several red squirrels.  There were quite a few people working in the cemetery, cutting grass or watering, and perhaps this didn’t help.

I tried again the same day at 3pm. It was hot and sunny now, and I thought I’d need to concentrate on the shadier parts of the cemetery.  However I quickly saw two hamsters, both out in full sun. One was in the western half, and one in the eastern half of the cemetery.

For anyone who watns to try searching outside the cemetery’s opening hours, parts of both the western and eastern halves can be viewed through the perimter fence – you might get lucky.
