The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!

The first trip report of the week was Bryan Kao’s from around Las Vegas, because the only addiction more dangerous than gambling is mammalwatching. He saw 16 species including Desert Bighorn Sheep, Bobcat, and Merriam’s Kangaroo Rat.

The next was Jan Ebr on Chiloé island who saw 9 species, 4 of which were lifers: Southern Pudú, Southern Monito del Monte, Darwin’s Fox and Chilean Dolphins.

And the final trip report was Samuel Marlin’s trip to Botswana and Zambia: Bushy-tailed Mongoose, Four-toed Elephant Shrew and White Rhino are some highlights. He would also like some help with a couple of mammal IDs – one of them has been confirmed to be a Bushy-tailed Mongoose, but the other is still a mystery mouse!

In other news, the Mammalwatching Podcast has returned! Charles and my dad talk about their recent trip to Sulawesi, during which they saw nearly 80 species (multiple of which were new to science).

Jean-Michel would like some help identifying rodents seen in Uttar Pradesh, India, and Jeroen Verhoeff would love any ideas on where to go for a tropical mammal trip next year – somewhere good for underwater filming, walking and night drives. Bruno Gomez, who will be in Evora, Portugal for a few days, is wondering if there are any good mammal spots nearby – especially for Egyptian Mongoose.

You are all invited to the next Mammalwatching Community Meeting which will take place on the 10th of January at 9pm UTC+1. The shortlisters of the NUTTER Awards will also be decided, so make sure you’ve uploaded your trip reports by then if you want a chance to be given the very fitting title of nutter.

Finally, check out this review of Mammals of the Southwestern United States by Troy L. Best and John L. Hunt, a useful mix between a field guide and an encyclopedia for the area.
