My Big Cat Year

Dear all,

I’m thrilled to let you know about my initiative for 2026… My Big Cat Year… For a short interview and teaser see MyBigCatYearklein engelse ondertiteling It combines my own longing for pristine nature, wildlife, and adventure with the desire to make a difference in the protection of that same nature and wildlife. I hope I can delight and inspire others with the images and stories of this journey!

Great thanks to Mammalwatching.com, its founder Jon Hall, and those of you who contributed to the always inspiring Podcasts. To hear guides, researchers, scientists and others talking with Jon and Charles is always fascinating and with its humor it also brings a great smile to my face. Also thanks to all of you who have contributed to the many trip reports, it is always great to read those and to get a glimpse of nature and its wildlife in those faraway places. It is certainly one of the inspirations for undertaking My Big Cat year. Many thanks!!

Should you wish to follow me on my journey, you can do so by subscribing to the newsletter or by connecting me on facebook, Instagram or linkedin. Obviously, I am also planning to make a few trip report contributions (it will be my first ones 😊) to Mammalwatching.com

So happy to see this happening Marc. Not only are you going to have a fabulous year but I believe you are going to do a lot for conservation and raise the profile of how mammalwatching is helping conservation. And that is important. I hope you will be able to appear on the podcast from time to time to share updates. Go get those 40 cats!

    Euh…. Asiatic lion??

That’s a really beautiful project. I was lucky enough to see 9 of the 10 biggest cat species in a decade of travels before Covid, so let me know if you need help with tips, though the forum already holds a treasure trove of information. I hope you’ll get to see the Mainland Clouded Leopard, which is the biggest one missing from my list.

This is a very exciting idea! Do you have a broad plan for the year, or a target for number of species to see?

    • Bozon

Tad, thanks! On the site there is a page called Maps and there you can see the Travel plan and the targets cats in each country. Also, I have made a list for myself per country and the key other mammals (and even the Birds:) which I am hoping to observe. Thanks again!

Awesome, I’d completely missed that. To offer a little feedback, I think 2 weeks in September to find wildcat is overkill if that’s your only target. We visited Northern Spain in October and every time we passed the fields south of Boca de huergano we saw wildcat easily, happy to send coordinates if that would be useful.

You could gain 10+ days back which would go a long way to getting more of the trickier ones, golden cats, borneo species, andean cat etc. Really excited to see your progress through the year!
