Trip Report – Borneo’s Rare Mammals Tour – Royle Safaris – August 2025
Royle Safaris runs several trips to Borneo each year, in 2025 we had 5 private tour departures and of course our popular Borneo’s Rare Mammals Group Tour. As normal on this itinerary we visited Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Kinabatangan River, Deramakot Forest Reserve and Sepilok and also had a post tour extension to Tawau Hills National Park. The trip was once again expertly guided by Mike Gordon and we had a great success of seeing 49 species of mammals, including rare and key targets such as Sunda Clouded Leopard, Pen-tailed Treeshrew, Sabah Grey Langur, Sunda Pangolin & Banteng (a Royle Safaris first in Borneo) as well as more common species such as Sunda leopard cat, Borneo orangutan, proboscis monkey, binturong, moonrat among other species.
The absolute highlight was a day time sighting of a Sunda Clouded Leopard stalking a Malay Porcupine in the road right in front of the vehicle!
Non mammal highlights included a huge saltwater crocodiles, reticulated python and a very nice argus pheasant.
Royle Safaris runs several trips to Malaysian Borneo annually and whilst most of these are tailored private tours we do have our standard small group tour running each year. Our 2026 group tour is now full, but we have started taking bookings on our 2027 trip (there are only 3 places available) for anyone interested please get in touch (info@royle-safaris.co.uk) for more info.
